Monitoring the Rehabilitation Works on RN1

As part of the management of the national corridor roads, DPCR has launched several rehabilitation projects which started with the PK21-PK22 (RN1) section and the Doraleh roundabout (RN3). Received a few months ago, new repair works have been undertaken at Omar Jagac and Iskoutir located on the vital economic axis of the Republic of Djibouti serving Ethiopia. Indeed, the road surface has been gradually affected by the crossing of the wadi and also by the dense and regular passage of overloaded heavy vehicles using this corridor. These works include several phases: Repair of potholes and crossings (between Arta & Grand Barra in the southern desert of Djibouti); Refurbishment of the flexible slab with a complete overhaul of the road from the base layer and optimal reinforcement of the slab (between PK56-PK57); Renewal of the bituminous coating over a linear 1km (between PK69-PK70); a. Implementation of gravel-bitumen with a thickness of 7 cm b. Creation of bituminous concrete with a thickness of 5 cm Application of a coated mat with a thickness of 5 cm over a linear 1.5 km (PK70-PK71.5). Improving the Omar Jagac & Iskoutir sections is essential for the goods and users traveling daily on the RN1. These 2.7 km long works were financed by DPCR and entrusted to the Djiboutian Roads Agency for a total duration of 4 months. These pothole repair activities will allow: A decrease in the transit time of trucks and users serving the hinterland; A significant reduction in transport costs through a decrease in accidents; Restoring the comfort and safety of users; Strengthening the road structure to improve the longevity of these sections; Recall that RN1 concentrates over 90% of land-based trade for heavy vehicles, composed – among others – of tridem trucks, tandems, and tankers. The DPCR team carries out daily monitoring and control missions to ensure strict compliance with the standards in force.
