Introduction

As part of its commitment to Djibouti Vision 2035, DPCR SA, which holds exclusive management of the corridor road network, has developed the DPCR CorridorVision AI project. This initiative aims to integrate artificial intelligence into road infrastructure management, covering planning, construction, maintenance, and infrastructure safety enhancement processes.

This ambitious project, aligned with DPCR SA’s mandate to rehabilitate, modernize, and maintain roads such as RN1, RN2, RN5, RN9, RN11, RN17, and RN19, incorporates advanced technologies to transform traditional road management methods into proactive and eco-friendly digital solutions.

An Initiative Aligned with Djibouti Vision 2035

Djibouti Ports Corridor Road SA and RapidCanvas have crafted an innovative strategy with the DPCR CorridorVision AI project, following the signing of a cooperation agreement in October 2024 in Djibouti. This project strengthens Djibouti’s role as a regional logistics and economic hub, enhances connectivity between strategic corridors, and facilitates smoother trade flows. By adopting advanced technologies and a sustainable approach, DPCR SA is modernizing road infrastructure management while reducing carbon footprints and maintenance costs.

Key Innovations of the Project

The DPCR CorridorVision AI technology development model is a first in the corridor road sector in Djibouti and the region. It includes classifying and documenting road deterioration into categories such as deformations, cracks, displacements, and potholes, enabling more precise and efficient management. This innovative approach places Djibouti at the forefront of modernizing road infrastructure through cutting-edge AI integration.

Figure 1: Application and Analysis Screenshot

  • Advanced Technology : The project relies on advanced AI models such as YOLO V8, capable of detecting cracks, potholes, collapses, and other structural anomalies on roads with impressive accuracy. These models are designed to optimize road design and maintenance, replacing historically time-consuming and resource-intensive field inspections. The models are powered by high-resolution videos captured with GoPro Hero10 Black cameras. These cameras feature integrated GPS sensors for precise localization and HyperSmooth 4.0 stabilization for smooth captures, even on rough terrain. Additionally, the system leverages computer vision techniques for real-time analysis, optimizing damage detection and repair processes. An interactive database centralizes all collected information, providing a comprehensive and dynamic map of road conditions.
  • Real-Time Monitoring : This project goes beyond monitoring or simple detection. Through the training of AI models and the expertise of skilled teams, the collected data enables advanced predictive analysis and strategic intervention planning. This ensures swift responses, resource optimization, and enhanced road safety while significantly reducing maintenance costs.
  • Real-Time Monitoring : An interactive platform provides geolocated mapping of road damage, facilitating quick decision-making for prioritizing interventions.

Challenges Addressed and Solutions

  • Climatic Conditions and Equipment Overheating: To minimize disruptions, teams adopted additional batteries and reduced video resolution to extend battery life.
  • Model Accuracy: With a target precision of 90%, AI models are continuously improved based on feedback from field teams.
  • Cost Optimization: DPCR SA negotiated advantageous subscription rates for the RapidCanvas platform and reduced equipment acquisition costs.

Expected Outcomes

  • FOR DPCR SA:

Creation of a comprehensive database on corridor roads.

Significant reduction in maintenance costs through preventive interventions.

  • For Users:

Notable improvements in road safety.

Enhanced driving experience on well-maintained roads.

Towards a Sustainable Future

DPCR CorridorVision AI is more than a technological advancement; it is a pivotal step toward the digital transformation of Djibouti’s road infrastructure. This project demonstrates DPCR SA’s commitment to building safe, efficient, and resilient roads, thereby reinforcing the country’s strategic role in the East African region.
